Empatica E4 wristband

The E4 wristband is a wearable research device that offers real-time physiological data acquisition and software for in-depth analysis and visualization.

The E4 contains 4 sensors:

  • Photoplethysmography (PPG) to provide blood volume pulse, from which heart rate, heart rate variability and other cardiovascular features may be derived.
  • Electrodermal activity (EDA) used to measure sympathetic nervous system arousal and to derive features relates to stress, engagement, and excitement.
  • 3-axis accelerometer to capture motion-based activity
  • Infrared thermopile-reading skin temperature

Attaching the bad-follow these steps to attach the band:

The E4 can operate in 2 different modes:

  • Streaming mode for real-time data viewing on a mobile device using Bluetooth
  • Recording mode using its internal memory

Empatica provides software tools that enable data to be transferred securely and easily from wristband to other devices:

  • Empatica Connect is a web application for storing, viewing and managing E4 data
  • Empatica Realtime is a mobile App that provides wireless streaming and visualization of real-time E4 data
  • Empatica Manager is a desktop application for managing the E4

When you power on the E4, make sure that the E4 starts in Standby Mode flashing green, which means that it is ready for use.

Error states are indicated by the following color combinations:

  • Flashing green and red indicates that the E4’s memory is full or the clock is unset preventing you from operating the device in Memory Mode. You can still connect to the E4 from the Empatica Real-time app on your smartphone/tablet.
  • Flashing green and yellow indicates that the E4 has a low battery and should be charged soon.

USB Connections

  • Connecting E4 to Empatica Manager via the USB charging cradle – the device enters Standby Mode (green LED); if there is data in memory the data transfer will commence indicated by alternating yellow and purple LED lights.
  • The E4 may alternate flashing green and yellow after connecting it to a USB power source when attempting to transfer data. Charge the E4 for several minutes, disconnect, and reconnect to initiate the transfer of data.
  • Charging the E4 – The E4 can be charged by most powered USB connections (5V). When connected, the yellow LED light indicates that the E4 is charging. The yellow light stays on until the battery is charged.
