Many areas of study within the social sciences benefit from simulation. It has a long history in scientific literature and proven its usefulness in a wide range of contexts. Whether it is to study if a process works as intended or if an intervention is effective, simulation can often aid. Especially in the area of logistics. Recent advances in computer technology have allowed for evermore complex simulations and have enabled the advent of consumer Virtual Reality (VR) technology. This technology has seen rapid adoption by the scientific field as a tool for highly immersive simulations. The BMS lab is equipped for and experienced with Virtual Reality simulation studies. Not with just the right equipment, but the ability to develop new VR experiences as well.

Virtual reality allows for the creation of highly immersive simulations, in which the participants often forget that they are partaking in a study. This allows for the observation of more genuine behavior in a highly flexible setting without risking the safety of the participant. Risk and safety researchers therefore often use VR and may supplement it with questionnaires or physiological measurements.
